ACTIVITIES & INITIATIVES OF MOTHER
‘MOTHER’- “A Support Group For Patients, Physicians and Public”

With the aim of popularizing the concept of Organ donation and Transplantation in Orissa to help prolonging the healthy life of the patients with End Stage Organ Failure, the MOTHER was registered on dt. 4.12.2006.

Immediately there after in January 2007 an awareness campaign was organized by way of distributing leaflets explaining the concept of Organ donation for a noble cause, both in Oriya and English languages.

On reading the leaflets many people used to Telephonically contact us to know more about the intended programme and the allied details. Some of them wished to pledge their organ immediately, and some wished to donate their body after the death. As far as possible we have tried to meet these people at their residences to explain things in greater detail to arouse awareness about and appreciation for the purpose of Organ Donation and Transplantation. But many prospective donors got disappointed when they came to know that there was neither the enabling rules for Human dead body donation nor for the Cadaveric donation of Organs in Orissa. However we kept continuing with our efforts for making more and more people aware about the concept.

Accordingly the Trust was formally launched on the 6th of May 2007 in the Rotary Bhawan, Bhubaneswar through the hands of Shri Biswabhusan Harichandan, the then Minister of Industries, Law & Rural Development of Govt. Of Orissa. In the same function the website of the Trust(www.mother.org.in) was launched and more educative and informative leaflets were distributed among the audience. There was active participation by the audience.

It was for the first time a National level seminar was organized on the 2nd and 3rd of June 2007 at Mumbai to which MOTHER was invited. Sri T.N.Panda, the founder Managing Trustee of MOTHER was elected as the East Zone Representative to the National Council of the newly formed National Deceased Donor Transplantation Network, having its registered office at Mumbai, to promote Organ Donation and Transplantation in the Country.

1. The World Organ Donation Day is observed on the 8th of August every year, the world over. MOTHER also observed it on the 8th of August 2007 in the hotel SURYANSH, Bhubaneswar with Hon'ble Justice K.P.Mohapatra, Former Judge of Orissa High Court as the Chief Guest. The detailed scenario of Organ Donation and Transplantation at the National and International level was presented by Sri T.N Panda. It was seen that the level of achievement of the Eastern Region in general and that of Orissa in particular is much below the National Level. Even the neighbouring Andhra Pradesh is miles ahead in Cadaveric donation and transplantation.

2. On the occasion of the 1st anniversary of MOTHER we organized the East Zone Meet of National Deceased Donor Transplantation Network(NDTN) at Bhubaneswar on dt. 9.12.2007.The programme was sponsored by KIIT University and it was held in their campus. There were participants from Andhra Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal, even though all the 12 states were invited. Hon'ble Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of Bihar conveyed his consent to attend , but could not make it because of his sudden illness. However we had Dr. Vatsala M. Trivedi, the only lady transplant surgeon of the country, who is the chair person of NDTN as the Chief Guest of the function which was presided over by our patron Sri. S.B. Mishra , a former Chief Secretary of Orissa.

In course of the deliberations, it was gathered that everywhere the Transplant surgery was started in some Govt. Medical College/ Hospital and the surgical cost is cheaper by 50 percent compared to the private Hospital of the same locality.

Hence the East Zone Meet of NDTN unanimously adopted the following resolutions,

                                RESOLUTIONS
1. The east zone meet of National Deceased Donor Transplantation Net-work, the apex body in the country engaged in educating & motivating the people for Organ Donation unanimously resolves to urge upon the Govt. of India, the Government of the various states and the Union Territories to introduce Annual DADHICHI award as a matter of recognition and encouragement to be presented o the individuals or organizations rendering exemplary services to the cause of Organ Donation & Transplantation in the country.

It was also informed to him that MOTHER has taken up with the principal Secretary of Health and Family welfare department since December 2007, but to no avail.

Apart from the awareness program, the highlight of this event was the felicitation of 3 eminent doctors of Orissa who performed the 1st successful kidney transplantation of the state as far back as in June 1985 at V.S.S. Medical college, Burla. They are Prof. (Dr.) Dingar Meher, Prof. (Dr.) L.K. Sahu and Prof. (Dr.) S.K. Palit.

All the speakers including the Chief Guest lamented the long gap between the 1st and the 2nd kidney transplantation, which took place in Kalinga Hospital in 2002, and urged that law should be more patient friendly and the Govt. and the society should make all out efforts to popularize Cadaveric donation of organs. MOTHER was specifically advised to take up with Govt. Of Orissa to arrange to put the necessary rules in place to facilitate cadaveric donation and transplantation.

H.E. the Governor while describing MOTHER as a great institution pursuing a noble mission termed Mrs. Nayak as Supreme Mother. Learned Advocate General gave a lot of insight into the legal aspects of the organ donation and transplantation as legalized by the Transplantation of Human Organs Act – 1994 (THOA 1994).
